We all understand how important exercise is for the body, mind, and spirit. What many do not realize is that if you are chronically ill, injured, sleep-deprived, on a caloric restrictive diet, it’s possible for you to be overtraining at a much lower level of physical activity. The consequences can have a profound impact on your overall health and wellbeing.
From the competitive runner, cyclist, exercise enthusiast that does CrossFit, weight training, high-intensity interval training, or the weekend warrior participating in a Tough Mudder all are at potential risk for overtraining.
It doesn’t take much to be on a downward spiral. It is estimated that 61% of all serious runners go through a period of overtraining in their career.

The key to recovery is to reduce or stop anything more than moderate physical activity for some time. How long depends on symptoms severity and how long you’ve been overtraining. Focus on gentle activities for recovery such as walking in nature, yoga, or massage. Address any underlying stress-induced HPA-Axis dysregulation, inflammation, gut dysbiosis, nutrient depletion, hormone imbalances, and oxidative stress. Get plenty of sleep and nap during the day. Ensure you do not restrict calories or diet once overtrained. Your body needs an adequate supply of macronutrients especially protein and micronutrients.
Overtraining syndrome occurs when an athlete doesn’t adequately recover after repetitive intense training, and can include fatigue, declining performance and potential injury.
It’s admirable to train hard to succeed in your chosen sport. Logging many miles, spending hours at the gym and working hard day after day can certainly help you achieve your athletic goals. But too much training without sufficient recovery can hinder your progress — and even lead to a decline in your performance.
There are two classifications for too much exercise: overreaching and overtraining.
Overreaching is muscle soreness above and beyond what you typically experience that occurs when you don’t sufficiently recover between workouts. Overreaching usually happens after several consecutive days of hard training and results in feeling run down. Luckily, the effects of overreaching can be easily reversed with rest.
Overtraining occurs when an athlete ignores the signs of overreaching and continues to train. Many athletes believe that weakness or poor performance signals the need for even harder training, so they continue to push themselves. This only breaks down the body further.
It may be hard to know when you’re overtraining. “It’s natural and expected to feel fatigued after challenging training sessions,” Dr. Goolsby says. “But feeling like you aren’t recovering between sessions or experiencing overall fatigue and difficulty pushing yourself during workouts can be indicators of overtraining.”
Athletic overtraining, also called overtraining syndrome, happens when athletes push their bodies beyond the ability to recover. It leads to fatigue, decreased performance, and increased risk of injury. I have been a sufferer of severe tension headaches, that can last over six days, for over 20 years. Nothing I did helped. (I carry my tension/stress in my neck and shoulders which is causing the tension headaches.) I started dry needling treatment with Dr. Geary two weeks ago (twice a week) and my headaches are about 80% better, and I have not had a headache since!! I have no doubt, in a short period of time, the tension in my neck and shoulders will be resolved through dry needling. I actually look forward to my appointments because it's amazing how much better I'm feeling. Dr. Geary is fabulous...he takes his time, explains why and where my headaches are coming from, is super friendly, is patient, and has found exactly what treatment I needed to conquer these headaches. If you suffer from tension headaches or migraine headaches and you're looking for relief, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Geary. I am thrilled that I found him and you will be too!!!
I have been going here for about 20 days Am gaining mobility and lost 25 pounds. Everyone is so kind, am very pleased with my progress
Wonderful people, Dr. Pete and Melanie. Started out with Chiro Thin , lost 42 lbs. also did two sessions of Chiropractic care. Turned me and my retirement around. Realized my health is almost everything to happiness. This place will help you. Honestly and integrity at the same time. Recommend them to anyone.
Wow! I walked in with lower back and hip pain and walked out pain free without my limp. Dr. Pete gave me exercises and stretches to do for “big picture” solutions to my problem vs. just chasing acute pain. Oh, and the computer scan was SO COOL and informative.
I needed a more naturopathic way forward for my neuropathy and I found it with Dr. Peter Geary. From day one he was “all in” with my unique health issues. He listened to my concerns and recommended an adaptive treatment plan. My care was anchored by a diverse, non-invasive chiropractic approach and holistic modalities of “light therapy” targeted to reach the deep nerves and blood supply. Dr. Geary brings not only first-class experience to his practice, but compassion and a great sense of humor. The same holds true for his talented assistant Melanie, who efficiently manages scheduling and ancillary treatment. I’m so grateful to Dr. Peter Geary, Melanie and the Brookfield Spine and Health Center. If you’re hoping for a healthier future, I highly recommend giving them a call today.
EXTREMELY happy with the care from Dr. Pete. Back issues for a number of years and Pete helped me feel younger and stronger. Great at explaining why I was having pain and what we needed to do to correct it. Plus - an all around good dude too. Highly recommend!!!
I came to the spine center dealing with constant nerve pain and many other chronic issues. Pete's approach to care is one based on research, experience, and diligence. I'm three appointments into our plan for treatment and have experienced the positive effects already.
Dr. Pete Geary at Brookfield Spine and Health Center is a game-changer. We sought his help for everything from sports injuries and mobility to routine maintenance, and the experience has been exceptional! It’s rare to find a practitioner so clinically brilliant, yet so genuinely friendly and honest.

He doesn’t just treat a single symptom; he holistically evaluates your lifestyle to uncover the root cause of the issue. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain or just want to stay at the top of your game, Dr. Geary is the best choice to get you back to 100% and participating in life pain-free.

Rich & Martha
To coin a cliche, Dr Pete's a God sent. I had alot of physical pain from driving a semi, past accidents and health issues that others were not able to me help with without putting me on medications, which would have given me other problems. (I'm not against medications, they just never helped in the past-I'm 73yo), I'm NOT willing to go that route anymore. Gradually, one by one, with his care, my symptoms are so...much better and after each treatment I notice improvement. He REALLY treats you like family.
Melanie needs a shout out too--So caring
Thank you Dr. Pete
I came in with major back issues and over weight. Way less pain and down 35lbs. These guys are great.
Dr Pete is an excellent Dr. I had severe neck pain & went through physical therapy but didn’t solve the problem. However, with the traction & the Pulstar adjustment , I am feeling 100% which is going on a month & I know it will continue.
The staff is amazing. You feel welcomed the moment you walk in.
This is the first time we've taken our almost 2-year-old to the chiropractor, and we just love how caring and understanding Dr. Pete is. He's very knowledgeable about the human body and explains everything to you, every step of the way.
He treats you like you're part of his family. ♥️
